Concept
This project started when I was contacted by a Malaisian start-up called U1. The company had already built the PCB and had already the specifications concerning the strong aspects of the product to consider like the camera and battery features for instance. The main idea behind the brand is to bring innovative products with a premium feel for an accessible price, a big challenge in a market completely saturated with new brands each year. My work was about the industrial design part, from the first sketch to the final 3D, working with the engineers in China, refining technical issues. I also worked on the CMF of the product itself, the website and the packaging.
Sketch process
The main idea was to create a chamfer around the body combining a functionnal and a strong visual aspect. The goal was to create a device with a strong identity, featuring the camera as an important part of the product. Creating something simple with a decent curve, but also something which is recognizable from far in a market completely saturated of new brands.
Development
After validation of the ideas, I continued to work in CAD with Solidworks including the PCB to get a concrete idea of how the product will look like with more defined proportions. Then, I started to explore some possibilities in terms of colors, materials and finishes.
